Over the past three decades, Higgins Lake water quality has been studied through professional research, long-term monitoring, and community-supported sampling programs. Together, these studies provide a clear picture of near-shore water quality trends, the role of groundwater and septic systems, and the importance of early detection to protect this naturally clear, low-nutrient lake

Why This Matters

Higgins Lake’s exceptional clarity depends on low nutrient levels. Once nutrient enrichment and algae growth accelerate, recovery becomes difficult and costly. Near-shore monitoring provides an early warning system, allowing the community to take action before irreversible damage occurs.

Role of Community Monitoring

HLPOA-supported student and professional sampling programs (2018–2024) strengthened the lake’s data record while:

Higgins Lake remains a high-quality lake, but research consistently shows that near-shore areas are the most vulnerable. Ongoing monitoring, responsible wastewater management, and informed shoreline practices are essential to preserving water quality for future generations.

Clear Water Does Not Mean Bacteria-Free Water

What looks clean may still pose a risk

Higgins Lake can look clear and still have elevated bacteria levels, especially near shore. Bacteria are invisible, change quickly, and are often highest where people swim and wade.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) monitors E. coli bacteria at many of Michigan’s most frequently used public beaches to help protect public health.

Beach water quality results are available through Michigan BeachGuard, where users can select a county and view recent bacteria data for local beaches.
