Current Status on Sewers
Current Status of the Higgins Lake Sewer Project
The proposed Higgins Lake public sewer project, which began planning efforts in 2018, was effectively discontinued in November 2024 following actions taken by the newly elected Lyon Township Board.
What Changed
- In November 2024, all five Lyon Township Board members were replaced by candidates who opposed the sewer project.
- The new board halted all sewer-related activities, including:
- Terminating the Special Assessment District (SAD).
- Refusing to approve required zoning changes for the proposed wastewater treatment plant, eliminating the planned site.
- Repealing the septic inspection and pump-out ordinance.
- The board replaced Lyon Township representatives on the Gerrish Lyon Utility Authority (GLUA) with members who did not support a sewer project.
- Due to Lyon Township’s refusal to participate in the sewer project, GLUA no longer exists, as its sole purpose was to design, fund, and implement a public sewer system for the Higgins Lake watershed.
