Founded in 1935, the Higgins Lake Property Owners Association (HLPOA) is the long-standing voice of lakefront property owners.
For more than 90 years, generations of volunteers have dedicated their time, expertise, and resources to protecting Higgins Lake and the interests of those who call it home. Many of our members are second-and third-generation property owners who understand that Higgins Lake is more than a place—it is a legacy.
Protecting its water quality, natural beauty, and property rights today helps ensure that future generations will experience the same clarity, character, and community that have defined this lake for decades.
Powered primarily by volunteers, HLPOA brings together property owners who care deeply about Higgins Lake and are willing to invest their time and talents to protect it. Through science, education, stewardship, advocacy, and community engagement, volunteers work to safeguard the lake
environmentally, legally, and economically.
Membership in HLPOA is available to Higgins Lake lakefront property owners. This unique membership structure ensures that the organization remains focused on the interests, rights, and responsibilities of those who own property directly on Higgins Lake. United by a shared investment in the lake’s future, members work together to protect both the long-term health of Higgins Lake and the property rights that help make lakefront ownership so special.

Our Legacy of Volunteer Action
For more than 90 years, HLPOA volunteers have stepped forward whenever important decisions affected Higgins Lake and its property owners. The organization’s history is one of lakefront residents working together to preserve the lake they love and protect the rights of those who own property here.

A Volunteer Organization with a Unique Role
Unlike many organizations, HLPOA is powered almost entirely by volunteers. From board members and committee leaders to newsletter writers, website contributors, researchers, and advocates, volunteers make our work possible. HLPOA is governed and supported by its members—Higgins Lake lakefront property owners who volunteer their time, expertise, and resources to protect the lake and represent the interests of the lakefront community.
HLPOA is organized as a 501(c)(4) membership association, which allows us to advocate, lobby, and pursue legal remedies on behalf of lakefront property owners. Other Higgins Lake organizations structured as 501(c)(3) charities are legally restricted in these activities.
This structure enables HLPOA to:
- Retain legal counsel to protect property owners’ rights
- File or support litigation when lawful process or fairness is at issue
- Engage professional lobbyists when legislation affects Higgins Lake
- Act collectively and effectively on behalf of its membership
As the only Higgins Lake organization positioned to take these actions, HLPOA ensures that lakefront property owners have a unified, organized, and effective voice when critical decisions impact their property rights and the long-term health of the lake.
For more than nine decades, volunteers have carried this mission forward—and HLPOA has never hesitated to act when the long-term health of the lake or the rights of its members were at stake.
