Restoration & Improvements

Replacement of the Dewey Road culvert restored upstream fish passage for spawning fish

Volunteer-led in-stream habitat improvements increased depth, cover, and channel stability

Projects were designed and permitted with support from Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR)

Post-project surveys confirmed brook trout and other species moving upstream following restoration.

Why This Matters

Tributaries play a dual role:

Protecting and restoring these creeks helps maintain Higgins Lake’s water quality, fisheries, and ecological balance.

Healthy tributaries are essential to a healthy lake. Continued monitoring, culvert upgrades, habitat restoration, and responsible land use are key to protecting Higgins Lake now and for future generations.
