What Was Studied
Natural creeks, springs, and man-made drains flowing into Higgins Lake—primarily Big Creek and Little Creek—were evaluated for:
- Water quality and contaminant transport
- Fish passage and stream habitat
- Long-term impacts on lake health
Key Findings (Combined)
Natural creeks, springs, and man-made drains flowing into Higgins Lake—primarily Big Creek and Little Creek—were evaluated for:
- Tributary creeks deliver groundwater, nutrients, and sediments directly into Higgins Lake
- Perched culverts restricted fish passage, limiting access to upstream spawning habitat
- Big Creek supports a self-sustaining brook trout population, confirming high-quality cold-water conditions
- Stream habitat in some areas was too wide and shallow, limiting larger trout
- Historical and modern studies confirm tributaries are important pathways for both pollutants and ecological benefits
Restoration & Improvements
Replacement of the Dewey Road culvert restored upstream fish passage for spawning fish
Volunteer-led in-stream habitat improvements increased depth, cover, and channel stability
Projects were designed and permitted with support from Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
Post-project surveys confirmed brook trout and other species moving upstream following restoration.
Why This Matters
Tributaries play a dual role:
- They can introduce pollutants from surrounding land use
- They also provide critical cold-water inputs and spawning habitat
Protecting and restoring these creeks helps maintain Higgins Lake’s water quality, fisheries, and ecological balance.
